![]() ![]() In his book, ‘Human Values in the Poetry of Robert Frost’, George W. ![]() Instead he sighs over his failure to take the ‘other ‘ road and laments his inability to travel both and be “one traveller.” Problem of Making Choice- A Major Theme in Frost: Nevertheless he made the choice but now he does not evince any pride or satisfaction about his choice. He knew it fully well that both roads “equally lay / In leaves no stop had trodden black” and it was really difficult to decide which road was less frequented. He kept on pondering over the matter for long and then at length decided to take the “less travelled” path. He reached a point where the road bifurcated into two different directions posing a problem in front of Frost. The poem presents the picture of a traveller (Frost himself) travelling alone. It has, therefore, received considerable attention and is one of the finest, most popular, much admired, much quoted as well as much misunderstood and criticized of Frost’s lyrics. This is a poem of tantalizing beauty and rich musicality and it seems to express the philosophy of the Yankee farmer poet. But soon Frost recognized the poem’s unintended applicability to his situation as a Yankee poet and in setting up his collection ‘Mountain Interval’ he placed it prominently in italics before the table of contents as a prologue. The poem “The Road Not Taken” was originally intended as an ironic ‘gentle joke’ on the wistful indecisiveness of Frost’s friend Edward Thomas who was killed in World War I quite early in his life time. Critical Appreciation of the Poem: Introduction: In this way, his wrong decision had influenced the whole course of his future life. The fact was that both the roads had bifurcated into the woods and he had chosen that road which had been less travelled by a large number of travellers. He also thought that in future he would regret his wrong decision. The poet was describing all this with a sad attitude because he was thinking about the first road which he had not taken for his travel. ![]() He knew it well that a road leading to the other roads in a confusing way that it had become difficult for him to return to that place from where he had started. As it was necessary for him to make a choice between the two roads, so he decided to make his travel by the second road and leave the first road for some other day. The poet came to know it when it was the morning time. In fact both the roads were covered with leaves which had not become black due to the movement of the footsteps of the travellers. It was only the confusion of the poet because there was not any difference for both of them being the same. He regarded it the better road because the grass on it had not been worn out because the travellers had not used it very frequently. Then he watched the other road with greater attention and it looked similar to the first road. First of all, he thought one road better than the other but he could not see clearly far enough because after some distance it was lost into short bushes etc. He was in suspense, so he thought over the matter for a long time. He could not decide which the right path to travel because he could not travel both ways. As he was ready to travel once all alone, he reached a place where the road had bifurcated into two separate roads and they got lost into the forest of yellow coloured trees. In this poem, the poet describes about his decision related to his travel along a particular road. This poem has been composed by Robert Frost.
